Birth story

Baby Coyote came into the world with a vengeance on September 9th. Want to hear about her birth story? Then keep reading!

On September 8th I had, what I now know to be my last pregnancy check-up! It went as always, and my midwife and I were hoping that baby would come soon! She suggested a few things that may help โ€œinduceโ€ labor and so I was on a mission to try everything. At this point, I was just ready to meet my baby!

That evening I started to have mild contractions and didnโ€™t sleep too great. They werenโ€™t painful, but they were within 4 minutes of each other. The next morning, we decided to go ahead and pack everything up and head to the hospital.

Labor or Not

Our friend met us at the hospital to pick up Moose and we headed in with the hopes of having a baby! Well, it turned out I wasnโ€™t โ€œin laborโ€ and so they sent me home. I wasnโ€™t very happy as the nurse just told me โ€œI would know when I was in laborโ€, I had thought I was in labor so that statement upset me! Anyway, we grabbed chick-fil-a to eat and went to pick up Moose. To make it easier for when I went into labor, we just left his bags with our friendโ€ฆ and it was a good thing we did! *Check out our hospital bag blog here*

Once we got home, we all took a nap and relaxed. I decided to take a bath to try and help me relax but I just couldnโ€™t get comfortable. Moose and I enjoyed some oatmeal for dinner and my contractions started getting stronger, and this time they were painfulโ€ฆ I guess the nurse was right that I would know (but I was still upset about the comment๐Ÿคฃ ). And at one point Moose was mocking me while having a contraction which was pretty funny even while trying to breathe through the pain. We loaded up the car this time A LOT quicker as I could tell things would progress fast.

The Real Birth Story Begins

I used the comb method to help with the pain. It is something I had seen on YouTube and researched. You hold a comb in your hand with the bristles to your palm and when you have a contraction you squeeze it. It is supposed to help you focus on something other than your contractions and direct the pain to the nerves in your palmโ€ฆ this did seem to help me, ***but do your research and talk to your doctor about it as I am not a medical professional.***

We got to the hospital and our friends yet again met us there to pick up Mooseโ€ฆ Let me shout out how AMAZING my friends are!ย  They made this whole pregnancy and delivery so easy for Melvin and me! And this is where our birth story truly begins…

This time around I couldnโ€™t stick around to chat. I kissed Moose and Melvin helped get him adjusted as I went straight into the hospital. At the time of check-in, I was having strong contractions 3 minutes apart and I was 5 or 6 cm dilated. I continued to progress, and they were checking me about every 15 minutes because I kept having urges to push. About an hour later I was 9cm dilated and asked them to break my water for me. Before the doctor was able to use the amniotic hook my water broke, and things happened VERY quickly.

A Birth Story like the Movies

Within minutes I was yelling that I needed to push, at which point my husband said all the doctors came running in. Throughout most of the time I was having contractions in the hospital I had my eyes closed as it helped me focus on being calm so I can only imagine this birth story looking like something in a movie๐Ÿ˜‚ , and my husband said it did ๐Ÿคฃ. Our little baby Coyote was born minutes later, exactly 1.5 hours after checking into the hospital.

My experience was totally different this time even though I had unmedicated births both times. As soon as I was in my labor room, they asked how I hoped everything would progress and never once pushed me in a different direction. I really appreciated this! Once baby was born and, on my chest, Melvin (who knew the gender) announced that we had a baby girl! This was a very special and emotional moment for me. With Moose I was not able to hold him straight away as he had some complications that required the NICU team to look at him first.

ย

We stayed in the hospital for 3 days and I was so ready to go home. I did enjoy the first 2 days of being able to bond with Coyote and spend time with her and Melvin, however by day 3 I was really missing Moose. Luckily the food was pretty good at the hospital and they gave you a lot of options๐Ÿ˜! It all worked out in that Melvin and Moose came to pick us up at the hospital, it was a very special moment for Moose to meet his sister that way. This is something I will forever cherish!

I am thankful to the amazing nurses, doctors and staff at our hospital who made the process of giving birth as smooth as possible. To my husband for his support. And to my friends who took care of Moose for us and provided us with the comfort we needed while he was with them!

Random thoughts… I should have taken my Haakaa to the hospital… Coyote was born while I was wearing daddies t-shirt, they didn’t have me change into a gown… I actually crave the hospital food, coffee and ice water ๐Ÿ˜‚

Epic!
