Sipping Local | The Anchorage, Ak Edition

By Mars

There’s something special about sipping locally brewed coffee and supporting a small business. When I moved to Alaska I was in awe of not just the scenery, but the never-ending coffee shop selection. I couldn’t wait to try them all. Here are some of the shops I keep coming back to… like a lot…

Kindred Spirits Coffee @kindredspiritscoffee

Kindred Spirits Coffee was the first coffee shop I stumbled across when I moved to Alaska. They have two locations. My goto is the downtown 5th Avenue location. This little shop has a variety of Barista Specials to choose from. I took this as a personal challenge and had to try them ALL, and so far, I have no regrets! My favorite is an Iced Werther’s Latte with oat milk. Which translates to, English Toffee, French Vanilla, and Caramel. If that’s not your thing, they can make just about anything your coffee-loving heart desires. To top it off, the baristas are incredibly friendly and always offer a little something special if you happen to have your pet with you.

Fresh Cup Espresso

@freshcupespresso located off Muldoon. Fresh Cup is exactly that, FRESH! These talented baristas know their coffee. I don’t think I’ve ever had a drink I didn’t like from this shop. My favorite is an Iced Nutty Irishman Latte with oat milk. That’s hazelnut and Irish cream, and damn is it good. My husband’s drink of choice is an Iced London Fog, which is Earl Grey tea with oat milk topped off with lavender and vanilla. The fun doesn’t stop there. They even have a sweet treat for your furry friend. Check out my “doghter” devouring her puppuccino.

That Feeling Co. @thatfeelingco

This unique shop is a coffee and plant lover’s dream. Every inch is covered with gorgeous plants, unique pots & ceramics, books, gardening tools, greeting cards & so many other amazing gift ideas to choose from. It’s impossible to leave empty-handed. Sip on a hand-crafted coffee and start shopping. Need help picking out a plant? Their friendly staff have your back. They can answer all of your plant questions from, “what is this plant?” to “how do I keep this one alive?”. They even give you a little information card explaining everything you need to know about the plant you purchased.

As if plants and coffee weren’t enough, connected to this gem is Johnny’s Produce. Here you can choose from a variety of amazing fresh fruits and vegetables. Oh and bonus, there’s a freaking smoothie & juice bar with all sorts of specialty drinks to choose from. This is one spot you won’t regret checking out.

A note from Shanay… As military families you often find yourself sipping at new local spots with each move. We hope that if you are newly stationed in Alaska or moving there soon that you will find this post helpful! If you are sipping coffee on the other side of the United States check out this post on coffee shops in Pensacola, Florida!
