A Best Friends Book Club

Ever wanted to start a book club? My best friends and I did! (Book Club Books 2021)

This year a couple friends and I created a โ€œbook clubโ€. Our goal was to read 1 book per month. I had already told myself I wanted to read 2 books every month, so, twenty-four books by the end of the year. We all live in different statesโ€ฆ thank you military =], so we decided we would do video chats one to two times a month to discuss the books. Here are some reviews by “Luna” and I on the first books club books (2021) we have read this year.

Book Club Books 2021-January

Our book pick set us off to a rocky start. We picked “The Vanishing Half” by Brit Bennett and NONE of us really liked the book. I thought it was a great story line but took a long time to get to the main idea and kind of left us hanging at the end. It didnโ€™t hold up to all the hype surrounding it.

โ€œI had high hopes for this book. I thought it was going to cover some serious race and cultural topics. Although it lightly touched on it, it overall fell flat. The storyline was slow and just sort of ended. It was hard to finish.โ€ -Luna

We moved on to Gabrielle Unions book “We’re Going to Need More Wine“. One of the reasons we started our book club was to explore different genres, I love Romance and Bios. My friends were not big into biographies, but we all LOVED this book. We had set chapter goals for each week and all of us ended up reading/ listening to the book in two weeks! We loved how raw and real she was. This book is perfect for someone wanting to feel emotions. We went from feeling happy to sad to mad and back to happy again. She touched a lot on race which is a big topic right now in the world and I loved how she was very REAL about the subject. I think its safe to say that Gabrielle Unionโ€™s next book will be on our book club list.

โ€œI was sad when this book ended. Gabrielle Union was raw, transparent, and vulnerable. I cried, I laughed, I cried againโ€ฆ You really feel connected with her throughout the entire book. Looking forward to her next book.โ€ -Luna

We decided on another Biography โ€œDear Girlsโ€ by Ali Wong. I enjoyed this book but it wasnโ€™t my favorite. I had heard of Ali Wong but never watched or listened to any of her stand ups. The book was funny and gave some insight on things I never thought about. However, it was a bit much for me with all the โ€œnaughtyโ€ language.

โ€œI love Ali Wongโ€™s standup, but listening to her talk vulgar in a high pitched baby voice for hours and hours was pretty rough. The best parts were when she touched on culture and her husbandโ€™s chapter.โ€ -Luna

A self help was our genre of choice, picking โ€œYou Are a Badassโ€ by Jen Sincero. I had started this book a few years ago but never finished for whatever reason. I was glad my friend suggested this one and really enjoyed listening to this book on Audible. (If you are a busy mom like me and love to read but can’t find the time, click here to try Audible, where you can listen to books and still maintain your busy lifestyle!) For me it was the perfect kind of self help, she didnโ€™t say YOU MUST DO THIS, YOU MUST DO THAT, she just shared her experiences and what worked for her while giving a thoughtful perspective on life. I highly recommend this book!

This was a different type of book for me, a mystery/thriller. I was a little nervous at first as I do not like to be scared but it was not that type of book. โ€œSadieโ€ by Courtney Summers had a great story line and kept you wanting more. Much like when reading โ€œWeโ€™re Going to Need More Wineโ€, I was hooked and wanted to listen every chance I got. There were unexpected turns and twists, and the narrators were great. As far as our book club myself and another friend did not like the ending and felt like it left things unfinished but our other two friends liked how it ended. Over, all I would still recommend โ€œSadieโ€ to those wanting to listen to a good mystery.

Due to military moves and the general business that comes with the summer we decided, to take a break for a month or 2. But be sure to stay tuned for my personal book reviews and book club books 2021 reviews when we resume.
