REVIEW

Always in December by Emily Stone
4 stars
SPOILERS AHEAD

I read this book at the end of December and wow, the cover is deceiving! If you are thinking this will be a cute Christmas-y romance, I regret to inform you it is not. It ends up being a sad but lovely story.

This is the story of Josie and Max. Josie and Max meet by accident literally, Josie rides her bike into Max in London, causing a big commotion in which she insists on buying Max a drink to apologize. This spirals into spending more time together before Max leaves without a goodbye.
The novel bounces from Josie’s POV to Max’s POV and I really enjoyed this aspect of the book.

After the whirlwind of London, you are following along with Max as he tries to figure out his life. Leaving you wondering why he can’t get it together!

More Spoilers

The two continue to run into each other in New York, and again in Edinburgh at a wedding. At this point, you think they might rekindle their flame but Josie continues to get more and more frustrated each time they run into each other. Max continues to try and help Josie figure out where she is going in life even though she does not want the help.
Throughout the book, Josie seems to comment on Max’s appearance although it doesn’t seem like a significant part of the novel. You realize as the book comes to an end that this was indeed very significant, as Max has slowly been getting sicker throughout the book. As Max leaves Josie’s life yet again she realizes that she can no longer hold resentment against him! But is thankful for the time that she had with him.

Always in December review

I loved that this book wasn’t your typical love story and even though the ending was extremely sad and tear-jerking it made it more relatable. I love romance books but most of them have a similar, predictable storyline. This one had a different ending than most, not your happily ever after, at least not in the way most would think. I was also able to connect with this book as she mentions places and things I have done in England. I’d recommend this book!

My fingers are crossed that you find some good books to read this month and be sure to share them with me below and over on my Instagram account!
