Call Me Maybe

4 stars

Call Me Maybe is the second book I read by Cara Bastone. I loved listening to this book because the narrators do a great job telling the story! The storyline starts with a stressed-out Vera calling into customer service to get help with her website. Cal, the customer service rep is insistent that he can fix the problem. During this call and many to come Vera showed her witty and outgoing personality which Cal countered in his positive and joking ways. They get to know each other throughout the phone calls as Cal tries to fix Vera’s website and slowly you realize there is more to these calls than anticipated. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an easy, funny, and romantic in a quirky way kind of read.
It gets 4 stars because I didnโ€™t like how quickly the ending happened. It was abrupt and I would have liked it a little more. But the story itself was very enjoyable.

Authentically Mexican

5 stars

Authentically Mexican, was a short listen that you can find on audible originals. In this short story JP Brammer, the author, shares a little bit of his life as a Mexican American. He shares how it intertwines with the food he grew up eating and the food he learned to cook as he was older. Because it is a short story he only gives you snippets of his life and how it relates to the food of each chapter. ย I enjoyed that, as it was enough to keep you interested but not bore you. I recommend this book to someone looking for a short easy read. To someone who wants to get a little insight into what it might be like for a Mexican American family growing up.

I give it 5 stars because I liked everything about it from the shortness to the storytelling to the family aspects intertwined.

Instructions for Dancing

3.5 stars

Instructions for Dancing is the 3rdย  book I have read by Nicola Yoon. It was also the first physical book I read this year. This unique story follows teenage Evie as she has become to feel that love isnโ€™t something that can last forever, so why pursue it? Along the way she ends up at a dance studio where she meets X, a boy her age. They enter into a dance competition together to help his grandparents bring attention to their dance studio. Along the way, the two become good friends and Evie discovers she can see things others cannot. This novel discusses love, love loss, parental divorce, and how all affected handle it, and death. I recommend this story to young adults who are wanting a different outlook on love.

I give this a 3.5 stars because I honestly found it hard to get into and keep my attention. It was a unique story as are all of Nicola Yoons books but this one just didnโ€™t captivate me in the same way. I did enjoy the storyline which is why I powered through and kept reading it!

January isnโ€™t finished yet so make sure you stick around to see what other books I read this month! I am hoping to read at least 2 more books! What books have you read this month? Tell me in the comments below!
