Our Garden
Starting Our Garden and Spending Time Outside
As a family we try to spend lots of time outside. It’s a lot easier this time of year when it isn’t too hot yet. Moose and I went to the garden store a few weeks ago and he helped me pick out some plants and seeds. We got flower seeds, vegetable seeds and fruit plants to start our Garden. Here are some things we are doing in our garden as well as in our home with plants!
Garden Compost
Since moving to Texas I’ve been wanting to start a compost area. I decided to just start and figure it out as I go. I have a raised planter with soil that I continue to mix fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds and leaves into. Moose helps me, and we mix it up every time we are in the yard. I’m pretty sure we have potatoes growing in it , so probably not the best way to compost but we are learning. Soon I will buy a proper composting bin like this one, do you have any recommendations?
Bird Feeders
Melvin and Moose had attempted bird houses last year but they didn’t seem to attract any birds. We recently had a wind storm come through and noticed one of the houses had lost its bottom and the other looked like it had been chewed by squirrels hahahah. We had a whole bag of bird food left so I decided to try another option. Moose and I found some pinecones while on a walk in the neighborhood. We picked 2 good looking ones and coated them in peanut butter. Then we rolled them in the bird seed and tied string to the pinecones. I hung them up, one in our back yard and one in our front yard.
These attracted a few birds, but 2 took claim and wouldn’t let others near them. Moose named them Carl the Cardinal and Carly. We can see the feeder in our back yard from our dinning table and Moose loves to look for them, they are usually around during breakfast so its like we are enjoying breakfast together. These bird feeders have been an awesome addition to our garden! I recently saw this window feeder and want to get it, I think we will all enjoy it!

Strawberries & Lettuce in Our Garden
I wanted to get some plants that we would actually benefit from. Moose loves strawberries so we decided on a strawberry plant and lettuce plants. So far we have got about 7 strawberries, Moose has been loving watering his plants and checking them each day to see if any strawberries are ready. I have also been loving this experience and teaching him where food comes from. We got 6 lettuce plants with our purchase and 3 died from the heat. I’m not sure how to know when they are ready but we have 3 strong looking plants. We plan to get another strawberry plant or 2 so that we wont have to actually buy strawberries from the store.
Growing Lettuce
I saw a video on Instagram on how to grow lettuce from your store brought lettuce, so we have been trying this as well. Its actually really cool to see how quickly the lettuce is growing. Once the propagated lettuce starts to get roots I plan to plant them in our garden! I hope they will continue to grow so we won’t have to buy lettuce. We’ve been enjoying a lot of salads lately so this would be an awesome for us to cut back on buying it from the store.
Plants in our Home
Orchid for Valentines
Melvin got me an orchid for Valentine’s Day. I am allergic to most plants and flowers so he had never got me flowers before. However we found out I am not allergic to Orchids which is awesome because they are my favorite flowers! I love waking up and seeing it each morning, it’s a happy start to my day. Do you have a favorite flower?
Propagating plants
I’ve been propagating plants for about a year now. I got a succulent and it grew so much, so quick. I did a little bit of research and decided to try propagating. So I cut a few pieces off and but them in water and watched them grow. I’ve done this about 3 times now. I think I will keep doing it and hopefully, I’ll be able to give them to friends as gifts!
This is how our garden and my green thumb are progressing. Do you have a green thumb? Do you have a garden? If you do please share all your tips and tricks with me!
