Biloxi and Ocean Springs Getaway

Biloxi

Biloxi, MS Vacation

At the end of 2021 my family decided to make a short trip to Mississippi. I needed to do a couple of things, so we packed up for a night away in Biloxi! Biloxi is only a short, 2-hour drive for us, but far enough away that it was like a mini vacation!

Because we are a military family, we were able to stay in the hotel on base there, so I don’t have any hotel recommendations. If you are also military and have access to bases this is an option, you should always look in to when traveling because most of the time its cheaper to stay on base. Once we checked into our hotel and settled in, we set out to do the few errands I had to do.

And so begins the beautiful disasters of our Biloxi vacation…

Vacation Disasters Start…

Before we even made it to the car, Moose jumped INTO a puddle, one he had previously jumped OVER twice, so we just thought he would again. Well, we only had one pair of shoes for him so… he got to wear socks for the next 2 hours while I went to my appointment. While I was in my appointment Moose and Melvin rode around on their bikes in the parking lot, Moose ended up with VERY holy socks hahaha!

So, after my appointment we decided to head to the store to get him a cheap pair of shoes since I had only packed him the one pair, he got wet. But not before I would spill a whole bottle of water in the front seat over papers, my purse and more! We cleaned up the spill and headed to the store. Once there we discovered they didn’t have ONE PAIR of shoes in Moose’s size… so we sized up and he spent the rest of the trip in a one size to big pair of crocks hahaha! He rocked it and didn’t complain at all!

Biloxi

Ocean Springs

Finally, on to the fun part of our trip! A friend had recommended Murky Waters Blues & BBQ, so we headed to Ocean Springs to their closest location. Ocean Springs is only about 15-20 minutes from where we were staying in Biloxi. We parked and walked the short distance to the restaurant, passing a lot of cute cafes, boutiques, and other restaurants.

Murky Waters Blues & BBQ

Once at Murky Water BBQ we perused the menu, trying to decide on dinner. For our starter we enjoyed 6 sweet Asian chicken wings, which is why this place was recommended to us. They were pretty good and probably my favorite part of the meal. For dinner I got the pulled pork quesadilla, Melvin got the combination 2 with pulled pork and sliced brisket with a side of mac and cheese, and waffle fries. We got Moose his own meal as well, he had kids’ pork sandwich with a side of baked beans. Melvin enjoyed his meal and so did Moose, I was a bit underwhelmed but maybe that’s because I got a quesadilla in a BBQ place…

After dinner we noticed even more cute places we would like to go, but it was getting late so we headed back to the hotel and decided we would go back the next day.

And so, continues our beautiful disaster saga… Biloxi

When we got to the hotel, we realized Moose had had an accident and his car seat was soaked. We figured out his car seat situation and headed in to get Moose ready for bed! Or so we thought. Moose doesn’t do well in hotels and so he had a very rough night, which meant so did Melvin and I. I got about 4 hours of sleep and was exhausted the next day, but I had researched some places I wanted to stop at for brunch and coffee.

We got to our first stop Le Bakery and picked up a HUGE loaf of garlic Rosemary bread and a meat pie. Our next stop was The Greenhouse, but unfortunately, they were closed, we didn’t see a sign or anything on their website about being closed so I was sad. I really wanted to try their quiche and biscuits. Hopefully we can make another trip there to try them. Melvin looked up some places and we found Jacked Up Coffee Bar which ended up being amazing. And on the short drive there we also saw some nice murals.

Places to Eat & Get Coffee

Biloxi and Ocean Springs

I ended up being happy about the change of plans because Jacked Up was fantastic! We got the Nola Iced coffees to drink. I got the small size, but Melvin got their HUGE XL size (32 oz I think). To eat I ordered the Caramel Pecan Praline Monkey Bread, and the Simply Breakfast. The Simply Breakfast consisted of 2 eggs (I got sunny side up), toast, cheesy grits and bacon. These were probably the best grits I have ever had! Melvin got the Spicy honey chicken and egg biscuit, which he said was spectacular. We shared our lunch with Moose, and I was mad we didn’t get him his own hahaha. Looking back at the menu, I have already decided we will be going back! Definitely stop here if you are in the Biloxi area!

After this delicious lunch we headed over to Ocean Springs. Melvin wanted to check the toy store we had passed, and I wanted to check out the French Kiss Pastries. We both wanted to try pop brothers’ popsicles. We checked out all the places, picking up a delicious cookie and tea from French Kiss Pasties, and yummy popsicles from pop brothers. We got Mango, Butter Beer, and Very Berry popsicle flavors. Mine, the Mango was the best, but they were all yummy. There was a chicken named Carl strolling around and you know MOOSE loves chickens, so he was super excited about this!

Biloxi Jacked Up

Bucee’s

We headed back to the car to get on the road back home. Everyone talks about Bucee’s the gas station and there is one on the way, so this was our last stop, about 40 minutes from home. Moose got in a good hour nap which was needed due to lack of sleep the previous day. And everyone is right about Bucee’s, it’s a pretty cool gas station. Here we got some candied pecans and pulled pork sandwiches. We originally only got one sandwich to share but went back in to grab more for dinner!

This over night trip was VERY eventful and exhausting but so worth it! We really enjoyed getting away from home for the day and exploring 2 new towns. I hope we get a chance to go back and explore some more. I have heard Gulfport is also very nice and close by so maybe we will check that town out too!

Have you ever gone a trip that was full of beautiful disasters? We made the most of all the small mishaps and didn’t let it stop us from having a good time! Where is your favorite overnight get away?

We once went camping (imagine that haha) and it was a good hour from anything. Perfect right? Only we got there and realized I had forgot diapers for Owen!! He was under 18 months. So we packed up that night and drove to the closest gas station we could find where we paid $15 for 20 diapers!

Oh wow! That reminds me of when we met up with you for our bike ride and forgot to bring helmets! Then we had to go by one for Moose! It all works out even if we end up spending more than we’d like 😂
